Great Western Railway Churchward Coaches

Churchward's early coaches are a mixture of experimentation and perpetuating previous designs but with a small 'improvement'. His first experiment was to increase the length of a Dean clerestory coach; D39 was really a Dean D30 stretched from 56' to 68' long. On the other hand, Churchward changed the roof a C23 to a high elliptical roof and produced his C25 diagram. He then took it one step further by combining the increase in length with the new roof and produced E78 composites. None of the designs though increased the width to 9' which became Churchward's standard width for most of his designs.
