Great Western Short Coaches

Transitional Body Style, Clerestory Roof, Central Brake or luggage with 4 compartments

This style of coach is classified by Lewis as LE7N.

There was only one design of 4 compartment clerestory coach with a central luggage compartment with tranistional windows, U29. It is classified as CAA7TN. This design is very similar to U27, which has normal windows and 12" eaves, see diagram U27. The 12 coaches built in 1886 to diagram U29 were 31' long x 8' wide and was originally a tri-composite:
    Third First Luggage Second Third

One U29 survives and I took this photograph at Shildon in 2005.
