The 1936 Sunshine Stock appears to have inspired by the Centenary Stock in that they had very large observation windows on the corridor sides. So large that the waist of the coach was lower than on any other
GWR design.   Each compartment had an equally tall window with sliding ventilators at the top.   As there were only 4 doors per coach, one at each end per side, the opportunity was taken to intersperse the
corridor side windows with droplights, similar to the door droplight, but only taller to match the fixed windows.   The door droplights were aligned so that the top was level with the top of the main windows.
Initally the livery had to be altered because the windows were so deep.   The low waist resulted in there being an appreciable area of cream below the door droplights and toilet windows.   So the class designations and
running numbers were put above the lining on the cream.   But when the Hawkesworth livery appeared the number and other writing was put between the two lines of lining.
After the first 4 designs (C70, D121, E151 & H53) were outshopped there followed a slight styling change.   The brake composites (E152) had the doors and windows aligned and could thus be painted in the standard livery.   A further styling change occurred and on the later designs not only were the droplights aligned, but compartment window bottoms were raised to align with the droplights. |
