Great Western Railway Collett Coaches

The 1933 design of Cross Country Service corridor stock was the first to dispense of a door opposite each compartment on the corridor side. Instead there were upto 4 doors with large picture windows between the doors. When compared to the 1930 design the sides look flatter for two reason; the cornice was almost as wide as the waist and also the tops of the sides were only just narrower than the cornice and not stepped in like many GWR coaches. These coaches were not bow-ended which only added to them looking like boxes. The doors had normal handles and the guard's doors were not recessed. Towards the end of 1933 it was decided that only 1 droplight was required in each pair of double doors; this resulted in new diagrams being issued for designs with luggage compartments.

The non-corridor design of the same period had the same non-bulging sides and ends and like the corridor coaches rode on 9' lightweight pressed steel bogies.
