The 1929 Cornish Riviera coaches were built to replace the Collett's 70' coaches of 1923. Collett is reported to have decided that he didn't want any more 70' coaches as the overhang of the buffers on tighter curves
concerned him. Consequently the 1929 Cornish Riviera coaches were only 60' long with bow ends making them 61' 4½ long of the bow ends. Since they were shorter than the 70' coaches it was possible to make
them wider over the cornices and waist. To accomodate the handles within the loading gauge they were recessed into the panels and doors. Guard's compartment doors were flat and recessed into the
bodyside as were the end doors on the sleeping and dining cars.
The coaches rode on Collett 9' heavyweight bogies. At first glace vehicles with a guard's compartment look very similar to the preceding designs, however, a closer look reveals almost flush glazing
which enhances their appearance.
In addition to the 84 coaches for the complete Cornish Riviera, including the slip and detacted portions, and principal West of England services, 19 sleeping cars and 2 5 coach trains for general service were outshopped to this design in 1929 & 1930. The Summer 1929 Formation of the Cornish Riviera Limited was: The Torbay Limited sets did not appear until September and October 1929 when the possible formation was: |
