9220 ex-1st 716 as it was running before the projections were removed when it was used by King George V on an
inspection on the Larkhill Military Railway. This somewhat ephemeral line left the Amesbury - Bulford line at Ratfyn Junction and
then wandered for 10½ miles across Salisbury Plain serving WD camps at Durrington, Larkhill and Fargo (hospital) and Stonehenge
aerodrome.  The line beyond Fargo was lifted by 1923 and the remainder of the line in 1929. - information and photo courtesy of John Lewis
716 originally built on 16' chassis and altered to 19' in 1881 Interestingly the wheelbase on the offical drawing was noted as 16' when it was renumbered in 1923.  It was not uncommon for the diagram book drawings to not be fuly updated, as in this case. |
